Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX9

In 2010, Sony took the slim compact class a step further. The Cyber-shot DSC-TX9 packed a 12.2-megapixel Exmor R back-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor, a Carl Zeiss 4x optical zoom lens, and a 3.5-inch touchscreen covering almost the entire back into an ultra-slim metal body. On top of that: 1080i Full HD video, 3D shooting, and burst shooting at up to 10 frames per second. This is the premium compact face of late-era digital that closed out the CCD era — an icon that fits in the palm of your hand, both technically and aesthetically.

✨ Why This Camera

The TX9 offers a rare combination in the slim compact class: a back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor, Carl Zeiss optics, a generous touchscreen, Full HD video, and a truly pocketable ultra-slim body.

• 🔍 12.2 MP Exmor R back-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor (1/2.3")
• 🎯 Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 4x optical zoom, 25-100mm equivalent
• 📱 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD display
• 🎬 1080i Full HD video recording (stereo sound)
• 🛡️ Optical SteadyShot image stabilization
• 🧊 3D shooting (3D Sweep Panorama)
• ⚡ Burst shooting at up to 10 frames per second
• 🌈 Sensitivity up to ISO 3200
• 💾 Memory Stick Duo / SD – SDHC – SDXC card support
• 🔋 NP-BN1 rechargeable battery
• 🖤 Slim black metal body with sliding front cover

The Exmor R sensor is what truly defines the TX9's character. Its back-illuminated design was built to deliver noticeably cleaner low-light results for a slim compact body — a difference you can feel under night street lights and in dim cafés. Optical SteadyShot complements this advantage by reducing blur in handheld shots.

The Carl Zeiss 4x zoom, starting at a 25mm wide angle, offers a practical range from a single lens: wide-angle shots for architecture and group photos, and closer detail at the 100mm end. The sliding front cover works as both a power switch and an elegant lens guard, forming a smooth, pocket-friendly block when closed. 1080i Full HD video and 3D shooting bring the era's top-tier features to this compact little body.

👀 Who It's For, Where to Use It

A natural choice for those who want something pocketable yet still capable of Full HD video and a large touchscreen, who are after the premium compact aesthetic of late-era digital, and who expect cleaner low-light results than CCD. The touch interface gives the camera a smartphone-like ease of use.

A practical companion for night city lights, café and festival moments, travel and street photography, and short video clips. Its slim metal body fits easily into the smallest bag, or even a pocket — ready to shoot the moment you pull it out.

🔥 RetroCameraLand's Take

The TX9's real strength is bringing together the best compact technology of its era in a genuinely slim body. While many compacts of the time still came with CCD sensors, Sony moved to a back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS here, which sets the TX9 apart from classic "CCD vintage" cameras. What you're after here isn't nostalgic color imperfection, but the clean, fast, premium character of late-era digital.

A 12.2 MP Exmor R sensor, Carl Zeiss 4x zoom, 3.5-inch touchscreen, and 1080i Full HD video — all in a pocketable body. Flashy features of the era like 3D shooting and burst shooting at up to 10 frames per second add to the fun. A well-rounded, characterful compact, equally suited to everyday use and as a design icon of late-era digital for your collection.
