Nikon Coolpix S4000 | Digital Camera

In 2010, Nikon showed that a slim-bodied compact could still deliver fun, characterful images. The Coolpix S4000 packed a 12-megapixel CCD sensor, 4x Nikkor optical zoom, and a 3.0-inch touchscreen into an elegant metallic body that fits right in your palm, topping it off with 720p HD video recording. With its finger-driven interface and touch shutter, it was one of the most user-friendly "pocket digicams" of its era. Today, that same CCD + slim body + touchscreen combination is exactly what naturally produces the sought-after Y2K digital look.

✨ Why This Camera

The S4000 offers a well-rounded package in the slim compact class: 12 MP CCD, 4x Nikkor optical zoom, a 3.0-inch touchscreen, and 720p HD video — all in a body that fits in your pocket.

• 🔍 12 MP CCD sensor (1/2.3 inch)
• 🎯 4x Nikkor optical zoom, 27-108mm equivalent
• 📺 3.0-inch touchscreen LCD
• 🎬 720p HD video recording
• 👆 Touch Shutter
• 😊 Smart Portrait System (smile timer, blink warning, skin softening)
• 〰️ Electronic Vibration Reduction (E-VR)
• 💾 SD / SDHC card support
• 🔋 EN-EL10 rechargeable Li-ion battery
• 🪶 Slim and lightweight metallic body

The 4x Nikkor zoom, starting at a 27mm wide angle, offers flexibility for everyday use: 27mm is comfortable for group and indoor shots, while 108mm brings distant details closer. What really sets it apart is the touch experience; the Touch Shutter focuses and sets exposure wherever you tap the screen, making shooting as intuitive as using a smartphone.

The CCD sensor is the main factor behind the S4000's image character. Unlike modern CMOS sensors, it produces more saturated, more "filmic" colors; that familiar Y2K look that appears with flash is this camera's signature. The 720p HD video is a fun bonus for anyone wanting to carry that nostalgic digital aesthetic into moving images too.

👀 Who It's For, Where to Use It

A natural choice for content creators who love the Y2K and "retro digital camera" aesthetic, anyone who wants touchscreen convenience and HD video, and those looking for a simple, pocket-friendly compact. Its slim metallic body fits easily into the smallest bag, or even a pocket.

It delivers characterful shots at cafes, festivals and concerts, nights out, birthday parties, and in travel and street photography. Thanks to its touch interface, you can start shooting the moment you pick it up.

🔥 The RetroCameraLand Take

The S4000's real strength is combining a bold-for-its-time touch experience with a slim, stylish body. While most compacts of the era stuck with physical buttons, Nikon moved the entire interface to finger touch, which flattens the learning curve to almost zero the moment you pick up the camera.

The 12 MP CCD sensor, 4x Nikkor zoom, and touchscreen come together into an enjoyable package in the slim category. The 1/2.3-inch sensor may look small by modern standards, but it's exactly that CCD + small sensor combination that naturally produces the "vintage digital" aesthetic in demand today. Its color character and that familiar Y2K look with flash are the S4000's signature — a fun compact for everyday use and for adding to a collection alike.
